Native radio history spans the evolution of the medium from its inception to contemporary audio broadcasting. Indigenous communities globally have utilized radio wavelengths for self-representation, advocacy, and community development, integrating distinct languages and a unique fusion of traditional and modern music. One of the earliest radio programs, “Indians for Indians,” launched in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1941. Created by Don Whistler, then the principal chief of the Sac and Fox Nation, marked a pivotal moment in Native radio history. “Indians for Indians” helped set the stage for Native-owned stations and media institutions that shape Indigenous media today.
